NEMUS: Sacred Grove

Often when entering a forest we become aware of a special atmosphere. Science tells us that trees “inhale” carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. But this alone does not explain the subtle energy that trees infuse us with. Since earliest times people have returned to forests for shelter, fuel, food and safety. But forests also offer a place of retreat and connection with nature and the divine.

Just like humans, trees are rooted on earth but reach towards the heavens. Many diverse cultures share a belief that particular tree species have spiritual connotations. Indeed, some trees or stands of trees have such a special aura that they have long been considered to be ‘sacred groves’. Over time they have become locations for culturally important events or rituals. From druidic Oak groves, through Old Testament Cedars of Lebanon onto the Celtic ‘Tree of Life’, they hold deep spiritual significance for the communities around them.

The work invokes the mysterious if not mystical presence that can sometimes be felt when we are surrounded by woodland. 'Nemus: Sacred Grove' reflects each artist’s individual life experiences and interpretation of these shared concepts.
