The Same but Different - Soma Contemporary Gallery
From Friday 7th December 2012 - Soma Contemporary Gallery, 6 Lombard Street, Waterford held a special Christmas exhibition focusing on artist outreach and community.
The joint exhibition facilitated the S.I.N arts initiative (Strength in Numbers), including Wexford artists from Studio Nine-Wexart, and also Transition Year students represented by local artist and facilitator Chris O’Brien Shanahan.
The Studio Nine-Wexart show included work by Fergus Doyle, Kevin Ryan, Iris Meade, and Tracey Elphinstone while the Transition year show included students from Waterford’s Abbey Community College, De La Salle College, Newtown School, St. Angela’s Secondary School and Waterpark College.
Curator Jacquelyn Johnson stated “the aim of this exhibition is to open a dialogue, in a contemporary setting, between transition year students, and the work of emerging artists”.
In autumn 2012 local Transition Year students took part in a Waterford City Council funded programme aimed at promoting participation in and understanding of arts processes and practice. Students were encouraged to express themselves creatively, reflect on their experience of painting and drawing, and to view their work in relation to that of their peers.
Their work has been combined to create three pieces representing each of the themes explored and marks the transition between personal and shared identity. Chris O’Brien Shanahan, artist & facilitator, is “delighted that SOMA has given us an opportunity to create an installation that connects ‘inward’ journeys and awareness of ones surroundings”.
